Narrated by: It was narrated that Ibn ‘Abbas رضی اللہ عنہما said:
ہم سے محمد بن عبد الاعلٰی نے بیان کیا، کہا ہم سے عبدالرزاق نے بیان کیا، انہیں سفیان الثوری نے سلیمان شیبانی سے اور یزید بن الاصام کی سند سے, عبداللہ بن عباس رضی اللہ عنہما کہتے ہیں کہ
Arabic Text
حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْأَعْلَى الصَّنْعَانِيُّ، حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّزَّاقِ، أَنْبَأَنَا سُفْيَانُ الثَّوْرِيُّ، عَنْ سُلَيْمَانَ الشَّيْبَانِيِّ، عَنْ يَزِيدَ بْنِ الْأَصَمِّ، عَنْ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ، قَالَ: جَاءَ رَجُلٌ إِلَى النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، فَقَالَ: أَحُجُّ عَنْ أَبِي؟، قَالَ: نَعَمْ حُجَّ عَنْ أَبِيكَ، فَإِنْ لَمْ تَزِدْهُ خَيْرًا لَمْ تَزِدْهُ شَرًّا .
English Translation
“A man came to the Prophet (ﷺ) and said: ‘Shall I perform Hajj on behalf of my father?’ He said: ‘Yes, perform Hajj on behalf of your father, for if you cannot add any good to his record (at least) you will not add anything bad.’”
Urdu Translation
ایک شخص نبی اکرم صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم کے پاس آیا اور بولا: کیا میں اپنے والد کی طرف سے حج کر لوں؟ آپ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے فرمایا: ہاں، اپنے والد کی طرف سے حج کرو، اگر تم ان کی نیکی نہ بڑھا سکے تو ان کی برائی میں اضافہ مت کرو ۔

“The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: ‘Whoever intends to perform Hajj, let him hasten to do so, for he may fall sick, lose his mount, or be faced with some need.’”
It was narrated that ‘Ali رضی اللہ عنہ said:
حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ نُمَيْرٍ، وَعَلِيُّ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ، قَالَا: حَدَّثَنَا مَنْصُورُ بْنُ وَرْدَانَ، حَدَّثَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْأَعْلَى، عَنْ أَبِيهِ، عَنْ أَبِي الْبَخْتَرِيِّ، عَنْ عَلِيٍّ، قَالَ: لَمَّا نَزَلَتْ وَلِلَّهِ عَلَى النَّاسِ حِجُّ الْبَيْتِ مَنِ اسْتَطَاعَ إِلَيْهِ سَبِيلا [سورة آل عمران آية 97]، قَالُوا: يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ، الْحَجُّ فِي كُلِّ عَامٍ؟، فَسَكَتَ، ثُمَّ قَالُوا: أَفِي كُلِّ عَامٍ؟، فَقَالَ: لَا، وَلَوْ قُلْتُ: نَعَمْ، لَوَجَبَتْ، فَنَزَلَتْ يَأَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا لا تَسْأَلُوا عَنْ أَشْيَاءَ إِنْ تُبْدَ لَكُمْ تَسُؤْكُمْ[ سورة المائدة آية 101] .
“When the following was revealed: “And Hajj (pilgrimage to Makkah) to the House (Ka’bah) is a duty that mankind owes to Allah, for whoever can bear the way.” [3:97] They asked: ‘O Messenger of Allah, is Hajj every year?’ He remained silent. They asked: ‘Is it every year?’ He said: ‘No. If I had said yes, it would have become obligatory.’ Then the following was revealed: “O you who believe! Ask not about things which, if made plain to you, may cause you trouble.’” [5:101]
It was narrated that Anas bin Malik said:
حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ نُمَيْرٍ، حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ أَبِي عُبَيْدَةَ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ، عَنْ الْأَعْمَشِ، عَنْ أَبِي سُفْيَانَ، عَنْ أَنَسِ بْنِ مَالِكٍ، قَالَ: قَالُوا: يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ، الْحَجُّ فِي كُلِّ عَامٍ؟، قَالَ: لَوْ قُلْتُ: نَعَمْ، لَوَجَبَتْ، وَلَوْ وَجَبَتْ، لَمْ تَقُومُوا بِهَا، وَلَوْ لَمْ تَقُومُوا بِهَا عُذِّبْتُمْ .
“They said: ‘O Messenger of Allah, is Hajj (required) every year?’ He said: ‘If I were to say yes, it would have become obligatory, and if it were to become obligatory, you would not (be able to) do it, and if you did not do it you would be punished.’”
It was narrated from Ibn ‘Abbas رضی اللہ عنہما that:
حَدَّثَنَا يَعْقُوبُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ الدَّوْرَقِيُّ، حَدَّثَنَا يَزِيدُ بْنُ هَارُونَ، أَنْبَأَنَا سُفْيَانُ بْنُ حُسَيْنٍ، عَنْ الزُّهْرِيِّ، عَنْ أَبِي سِنَانٍ، عَنْ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ: أَنَّ الْأَقْرَعَ بْنَ حَابِسٍ، سَأَلَ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، فَقَالَ: يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ، الْحَجُّ فِي كُلِّ سَنَةٍ أَوْ مَرَّةً وَاحِدَةً؟، قَالَ: بَلْ مَرَّةً وَاحِدَةً فَمَنِ اسْتَطَاعَ فَتَطَوَّعَ .
Aqra’ bin Habis رضی اللہ عنہ asked the Prophet (ﷺ): “O Messenger of Allah, is Hajj (required) every year, or just once” He said: “Rather it is just once. And whoever can perform Hajj voluntarily, let him do so.”
