حَدَّثَنِي مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبَّادٍ، حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ، عَنْ عَمْرٍو، عَنْ جَابِرٍ قَالَ: كَانَ مُعَاذٌ، يُصَلِّي مَعَ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ثُمَّ يَأْتِي فَيَؤُمُّ قَوْمَهُ، فَصَلَّى لَيْلَةً مَعَ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ الْعِشَاءَ ثُمَّ أَتَى قَوْمَهُ فَأَمَّهُمْ فَافْتَتَحَ بِسُورَةِ الْبَقَرَةِ فَانْحَرَفَ رَجُلٌ فَسَلَّمَ ثُمَّ صَلَّى وَحْدَهُ وَانْصَرَفَ فَقَالُوا لَهُ: أَنَافَقْتَ؟ يَا فُلَانُ، قَالَ: لَا. وَاللهِ وَلَآتِيَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَلَأُخْبِرَنَّهُ. فَأَتَى رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَقَالَ: يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ، إِنَّا أَصْحَابُ نَوَاضِحَ نَعْمَلُ بِالنَّهَارِ وَإِنَّ مُعَاذًا صَلَّى مَعَكَ الْعِشَاءَ، ثُمَّ أَتَى فَافْتَتَحَ بِسُورَةِ الْبَقَرَةِ فَأَقْبَلَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ عَلَى مُعَاذٍ فَقَالَ: «يَا مُعَاذُ أَفَتَّانٌ أَنْتَ؟ اقْرَأْ بِكَذَا وَاقْرَأْ بِكَذَا» قَالَ سُفْيَانُ: فَقُلْتُ لِعَمْرٍو، إِنَّ أَبَا الزُّبَيْرِ، حَدَّثَنَا عَنْ جَابِرٍ، أَنَّهُ قَالَ: اقْرَأْ وَالشَّمْسِ وَضُحَاهَا وَالضُّحَى، وَاللَّيْلِ إِذَا يَغْشَى، وَسَبِّحِ اسْمَ رَبِّكَ الْأَعْلَى فَقَالَ عَمْرٌو نَحْوَ هَذَا.
English Translation
Mu'adh bin Jabal رضی اللہ عنہ used to pray with the Apostle ( صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم ), then came and led his people in prayer. One night he said the night prayer with the Messenger of Allah ( صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم ). He then came to his people and led them in prayer beginning with Surat al-Baqara. A man turned aside, pronounced the taslim (salutation for concluding the prayer), then prayed alone and departed. The people said to him: Have you become a hypocrite, so and so? He said: I swear by Allah that I have not, but I will certainly go to Allah's Messenger ( صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم ) and will inform (him) about this. He then came to the Messenger of Allah ( صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم ) and said: Messenger of Allah, we look after camels used for watering and work by day. Mu'adh رضی اللہ عنہ said the night prayer with you. He then came and began with Surat al-Baqara. Allah's Messenger ( صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم ) then turned to Mu'adh رضی اللہ عنہ and said: Are you there to (put the people) to trial? Recite such and recite such (and such a surah). It is transmitted on the authority of Jabir رضی اللہ عنہ , as told by Sufyan, that he (the Holy Prophet) had said: By the sun and its morning brightness (Surah xci), By brightness (Surah xciii), By the night when it spreads (Surah xcii), and Glorify the name of thy most high Lord (Surah lxxxii).
Urdu Translation
حضرت معاذ رضی اللہ عنہ نبی اکرمﷺ کے ساتھ نماز پڑھا کرتے تھے ، پھر آ کر اپنے قبیلے کی ( مسجد میں ) امامت کراتے ، ایک رات انہوں نے عشاء کی نماز رسول اللہﷺ کے ساتھ پڑھی ، پھر اپنی قوم کے پاس آئے ، ان کی امامت اور ( سورۃ فاتحہ کے بعد ) سورۃ بقرہ پڑھنی شروع کر دی ۔ ایک شخص الگ ہو گیا ، ( نماز سے ، سلام پھیرا ، پھر اکیلے نماز پڑھی اور چلا گیا تو لوگوں نے اس سے کہا : اے فلاں! کیا تو منافق ہو گیا ہے؟ اس نے جواب دیا : اللہ کی قسم! نہیں ، میں ضرور رسول اللہﷺ کی خدمت میں حاضر ہو کر آپ کو اس معاملے سے آگاہ کروں گا ، چنانچہ وہ رسول اللہﷺ کی خدمت میں حاضر ہوا اور عرض کی : اے اللہ کے رسول! ہم ان اونٹوں والے ہیں جو پانی ڈھوتے ہیں ، دن بھر کام کرتے ہیں اور معاذ رضی اللہ عنہ نے عشاء کی نماز آپ کے ساتھ پڑھی ، پھر آ کر سورۃ بقرہ کے ساتھ نماز شروع کر دی ۔ رسول اللہﷺ نے ( یہ سن کر ) حضرت معاذ رضی اللہ عنہ کی طرف رخ کیا اور فرمایا : ’’اے معاذ! کیا لوگوں کو فتنے میں مبتلا کرنے والے ہو؟ فلاں سورت پڑھا کرو اور فلاں سورت پڑھا کرو ۔ ‘ ‘ سفیان نے کہا : میں نے عمرو سے کہا : ابو زبیر نے ہمیں جابر رضی اللہ عنہ سے بیان کیا کہ آپ نے فرمایا : ﴿والشمس وضحاها﴾ ﴿والضحى﴾ ، ﴿واليل إذا يغشى﴾ اور ﴿سبح اسم ربك الأعلى﴾ پڑھا کرو ۔ اور عمرو نے کہا : اس جیسی ( سورتیں پڑھا کرو)

حَدَّثَنَا إِسْحَاقُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ الْحَنْظَلِيُّ، حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ بَكْرٍ، ح وَحَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ رَافِعٍ، حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّزَّاقِ قَالَا: أَخْبَرَنَا ابْنُ جُرَيْجٍ، ح وَحَدَّثَنِي هَارُونُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللهِ - وَاللَّفْظُ لَهُ - قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا حَجَّاجُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ، قَالَ: قَالَ ابْنُ جُرَيْجٍ: أَخْبَرَنِي نَافِعٌ، مَوْلَى ابْنِ عُمَرَ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ عُمَرَ أَنَّهُ قَالَ: كَانَ الْمُسْلِمُونَ حِينَ قَدِمُوا الْمَدِينَةَ يَجْتَمِعُونَ فَيَتَحَيَّنُونَ الصَّلَوَاتِ، وَلَيْسَ يُنَادِي بِهَا أَحَدٌ، فَتَكَلَّمُوا يَوْمًا فِي ذَلِكَ فَقَالَ بَعْضُهُمْ: اتَّخِذُوا نَاقُوسًا مِثْلَ نَاقُوسِ النَّصَارَى، وَقَالَ بَعْضُهُمْ: قَرْنًا مِثْلَ قَرْنِ الْيَهُودِ، فَقَالَ عُمَرُ أَوَلَا تَبْعَثُونَ رَجُلًا يُنَادِي بِالصَّلَاةِ؟ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: «يَا بِلَالُ قُمْ فَنَادِ بِالصَّلَاةِ».
When the Muslims came to Medina, they gathered and sought to know the time of prayer but no one summoned them. One day they discussed the matter, and some of them said: Use something like the bell of the Christians and some of them said: Use horn like that of the Jews. Umar رضی اللہ عنہ said: Why may not a be appointed who should call (people) to prayer? The Messenger of Allah ( صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم ) said: O Bilal, get up and summon (the people) to prayer.
Anas رضی اللہ عنہ reported:
حَدَّثَنَا خَلَفُ بْنُ هِشَامٍ، حَدَّثَنَا حَمَّادُ بْنُ زَيْدٍ، ح وَحَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ يَحْيَى، أَخْبَرَنَا إِسْمَاعِيلُ ابْنُ عُلَيَّةَ، جَمِيعًا عَنْ خَالِدٍ الْحَذَّاءِ، عَنْ أَبِي قِلَابَةَ، عَنْ أَنَسٍ، قَالَ: «أُمِرَ بِلَالٌ أَنْ يَشْفَعَ الْأَذَانَ وَيُوتِرَ الْإِقَامَةَ» زَادَ يَحْيَى، فِي حَدِيثِهِ عَنِ ابْنِ عُلَيَّةَ، فَحَدَّثْتُ بِهِ أَيُّوبَ فَقَالَ: إِلَّا الْإِقَامَةَ.
Bilal رضی اللہ عنہ was commanded (by the Messenger of Allah) to repeat (the phrases of) Adhan twice and once in Iqama. The narrator said: I made a mention of it before Ayyub who said: Except for saying: Qamat-is-Salat [the time for prayer has come].
Anas bin Malik رضی اللہ عنہ reported:
وَحَدَّثَنَا إِسْحَاقُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ الْحَنْظَلِيُّ، أَخْبَرَنَا عَبْدُ الْوَهَّابِ الثَّقَفِيُّ، حَدَّثَنَا خَالِدٌ الْحَذَّاءُ، عَنْ أَبِي قِلَابَةَ، عَنْ أَنَسِ بْنِ مَالِكٍ، قَالَ: ذَكَرُوا أَنْ يُعْلِمُوا وَقْتَ الصَّلَاةِ بِشَيْءٍ يَعْرِفُونَهُ فَذَكَرُوا أَنْ يُنَوِّرُوا نَارًا، أَوْ يَضْرِبُوا نَاقُوسًا «فَأُمِرَ بِلَالٌ أَنْ يَشْفَعَ الْأَذَانَ وَيُوتِرَ الْإِقَامَةَ.
They (the Companions) discussed that they should know the timings of prayer by means of something recognized by all. Some of them said that fire should be lighted or a bell should be rung. But Bilal was ordered to repeat the phrases twice in Adhan, and once in Iqama.
This hadith is transmitted by Khalid Hadhdha with the same chain of transmitters (and the words are):
وَحَدَّثَنِي مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ حَاتِمٍ، حَدَّثَنَا بَهْزٌ، حَدَّثَنَا وُهَيْبٌ، حَدَّثَنَا خَالِدٌ الْحَذَّاءُ، بِهَذَا الْإِسْنَادِ لَمَّا كَثُرَ النَّاسُ ذَكَرُوا أَنْ يُعْلِمُوا بِمِثْلِ حَدِيثِ الثَّقَفِيِّ، غَيْرَ أَنَّهُ قَالَ: أَنْ يُورُوا نَارًا.
When the majority of the people discussed they should know, like the hadith narrated by al-Thaqafi (mentioned above) except for the words: They (the people) should kindle fire.
