قَالَتْ زَيْنَبُ: سَمِعْتُ أُمِّي أُمَّ سَلَمَةَ، تَقُولُ: جَاءَتِ امْرَأَةٌ إِلَى رَسُولِ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، فَقَالَتْ: يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ، إِنَّ ابْنَتِي تُوُفِّيَ عَنْهَا زَوْجُهَا، وَقَدِ اشْتَكَتْ عَيْنُهَا، أَفَنَكْحُلُهَا؟ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: «لَا» - مَرَّتَيْنِ أَوْ ثَلَاثًا، كُلَّ ذَلِكَ يَقُولُ: لَا - ثُمَّ قَالَ: «إِنَّمَا هِيَ أَرْبَعَةُ أَشْهُرٍ وَعَشْرٌ، وَقَدْ كَانَتْ إِحْدَاكُنَّ فِي الْجَاهِلِيَّةِ تَرْمِي بِالْبَعْرَةِ عَلَى رَأْسِ الْحَوْلِ».

Urdu Translation

میں نے اپنی والدہ ام سلمہ رضی اللہ عنہا سے سنا وہ کہہ رہی تھیں ، ایک عورت رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم کی خدمت میں حاضر ہوئی اور عرض کی :اللہ کے رسول! میری بیٹی کا شوہر فوت ہو گیا ہے ۔ اور اس کی آنکھوں میں تکلیف ہے ۔ کیا ہم اسے سرمہ لگا دیں؟ تو رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے فرمایا : نہیں دو یا تین بار ( پوچھا گیا ) ہر بار آپ فرماتے : نہیں ۔ پھر فرمایا : یہ تو صرف چار ماہ دس دن ہیں ، حالانکہ جاہلیت میں تم میں سے ایک عورت ( پورا ) ایک سال گزرنے کے بعد مینگنی پھینکا کرتی تھی.

English Translation

Meaning of the narration

I heard my mother Umm Salama (رضی اللہ عنہا) as saying: A woman came to Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) and said: Allah's Messenger. I have a daughter whose husband has died and there has developed some trouble in her eye; should we apply collyrium to it? Thereupon Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said: No (repeating it twice or thrice, saying only, NO" all the time). Then he said: It is only four mouths and ten days, whereas in the pre Islamic period none of you threw away the dung until one year had passed.
