The Book of Eclipses

ہم سے موسیٰ بن عبدالرحمٰن مسروقی نے ابو اسامہ کی سند سے، بریدہ کی سند سے، ابو بردہ کی سند سے, ابوموسیٰ اشعری رضی اللہ عنہ کہتے ہیں کہ
Arabic Text
أَخْبَرَنَا مُوسَى بْنُ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ الْمَسْرُوقِيُّ، عَنْ أَبِي أُسَامَةَ، عَنْ بُرَيْدٍ، عَنْ أَبِي بُرْدَةَ، عَنْ أَبِي مُوسَى، قال: خَسَفَتِ الشَّمْسُ فَقَامَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَزِعًا يَخْشَى أَنْ تَكُونَ السَّاعَةُ، فَقَامَ حَتَّى أَتَى الْمَسْجِدَ، فَقَامَ يُصَلِّي بِأَطْوَلِ قِيَامٍ وَرُكُوعٍ وَسُجُودٍ مَا رَأَيْتُهُ يَفْعَلُهُ فِي صَلَاتِهِ قَطُّ، ثُمَّ قَالَ: إِنَّ هَذِهِ الْآيَاتِ الَّتِي يُرْسِلُ اللَّهُ لَا تَكُونُ لِمَوْتِ أَحَدٍ وَلَا لِحَيَاتِهِ وَلَكِنَّ اللَّهَ يُرْسِلُهَا يُخَوِّفُ بِهَا عِبَادَهُ، فَإِذَا رَأَيْتُمْ مِنْهَا شَيْئًا فَافْزَعُوا إِلَى ذِكْرِهِ وَدُعَائِهِ وَاسْتِغْفَارِهِ .
English Translation
There was an eclipse of the sun, and the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) got up in a rush, fearing that it might be the Hour. He went to the masjid, where he stood and prayed, standing, bowing and prostrating for the longest time that I ever saw him do in prayer. Then he said: 'These signs that Allah (SWT) sends do not occur for the death or birth of anyone, but Allah (SWT) sends them to strike fear into His slaves. If you see any of these things, then hasten to remember Him, call upon Him supplicate and ask for His forgiveness.'
Urdu Translation
سورج گرہن لگا تو رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم گھبرا کر کھڑے ہوئے، آپ ڈر رہے تھے کہ کہیں قیامت تو نہیں آ گئی ہے، چنانچہ آپ اٹھے یہاں تک کہ مسجد آئے، پھر نماز پڑھنے کھڑے ہوئے تو آپ نے اتنے لمبے لمبے قیام، رکوع اور سجدے کیے کہ اتنے لمبے میں نے آپ کو کسی نماز میں کرتے نہیں دیکھا، پھر آپ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے فرمایا: یہ وہ نشانیاں ہیں جنہیں اللہ تعالیٰ بھیجتا ہے، یہ نہ کسی کے مرنے سے ہوتے ہیں نہ کسی کے پیدا ہونے سے، بلکہ اللہ تعالیٰ انہیں اپنے بندوں کو ڈرانے کے لیے بھیجتا ہے، تو جب تم ان میں سے کچھ دیکھو تو اللہ کو یاد کرنے اور اس سے دعا اور استغفار کرنے کے لیے دوڑ پڑو ۔

It was narrated that Abu Bakrah رضی اللہ عنہ said:
أَخْبَرَنَا قُتَيْبَةُ، قال: حَدَّثَنَا حَمَّادٌ، عَنْ يُونُسَ، عَنِ الْحَسَنِ، عَنْ أَبِي بَكْرَةَ، قال: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: إِنَّ الشَّمْسَ وَالْقَمَرَ آيَتَانِ مِنْ آيَاتِ اللَّهِ تَعَالَى لَا يَنْكَسِفَانِ لِمَوْتِ أَحَدٍ وَلَا لِحَيَاتِهِ، وَلَكِنَّ اللَّهَ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ يُخَوِّفُ بِهِمَا عِبَادَهُ .
The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: 'The sun and moon are two signs of Allah (SWT), the Most High, and they do not become eclipsed for death or birth of anyone, rather Allah (SWT), the Mighty and Sublime, strikes fear into His slaves through them.'
Abdur-Rahman bin Samurah رضی اللہ عنہ said:
أَخْبَرَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ الْمُبَارَكِ، قال: حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو هِشَامٍ هُوَ الْمُغِيرَةُ بْنُ سَلَمَةَ، قال: حَدَّثَنَا وُهَيْبٌ، قال: حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو مَسْعُودٍ الْجُرَيْرِيُّ، عَنْ حَيَّانَ بْنِ عُمَيْرٍ، قال: حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ سَمُرَةَ، قال: بَيْنَا أَنَا أَتَرَامَى بِأَسْهُمٍ لِي بِالْمَدِينَةِ إِذِ انْكَسَفَتِ الشَّمْسُ فَجَمَعْتُ أَسْهُمِي، وَقُلْتُ: لَأَنْظُرَنَّ مَا أَحْدَثَهُ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فِي كُسُوفِ الشَّمْسِ، فَأَتَيْتُهُ مِمَّا يَلِي ظَهْرَهُ وَهُوَ فِي الْمَسْجِدِ، فَجَعَلَ يُسَبِّحُ وَيُكَبِّرُ وَيَدْعُو حَتَّى حُسِرَ عَنْهَا ، قَالَ: ثُمَّ قَامَ فَصَلَّى رَكْعَتَيْنِ وَأَرْبَعَ سَجَدَاتٍ .
While I was (practicing) shooting some arrows in Al-Madinah, the sun became eclipsed. I gathered up my arrows and said: 'I want to see what the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) will say about the eclipse of the sun.' So I came to him from behind when he was in the masjid, and he started to say the tasbih and takbir and to supplicate until the eclipse was over. Then he stood up and prayed two rak'ahs with four prostrations.
It was narrated from 'Abdullah bin 'Umar رضی اللہ عنہم that:
أَخْبَرَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ سَلَمَةَ، قال: أَنْبَأَنَا ابْنُ وَهْبٍ، عَنْ عَمْرِو بْنِ الْحَارِثِ، أَنَّ عَبْدَ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنَ الْقَاسِمِ حَدَّثَهُ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عُمَرَ، عَنْ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ: إِنَّ الشَّمْسَ وَالْقَمَرَ لَا يَخْسِفَانِ لِمَوْتِ أَحَدٍ وَلَا لِحَيَاتِهِ، وَلَكِنَّهُمَا آيَتَانِ مِنْ آيَاتِ اللَّهِ تَعَالَى، فَإِذَا رَأَيْتُمُوهُمَا فَصَلُّوا .

It was narrated that Abu Mas'ud رضی اللہ عنہ said:
أَخْبَرَنَا يَعْقُوبُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ، قال: حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى، عَنْ إِسْمَاعِيلَ، قال: حَدَّثَنِي قَيْسٌ، عَنْ أَبِي مَسْعُودٍ، قال: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: إِنَّ الشَّمْسَ وَالْقَمَرَ لَا يَنْكَسِفَانِ لِمَوْتِ أَحَدٍ، وَلَكِنَّهُمَا آيَتَانِ مِنْ آيَاتِ اللَّهِ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ، فَإِذَا رَأَيْتُمُوهُمَا فَصَلُّوا .
