The Book of Purification

ہم سے احمد بن محمد بن مغیرہ نے بیان کیا، کہا کہ ہم سے عثمان بن سعید نے شعیب کی سند سے، وہ زہری کی سند سے، انہوں نے کہا: مجھ سے عبداللہ بن ابی بکر بن عمرو بن حزم نے بیان کیا, عروہ بن زبیر کہتے ہیں کہ

أَخْبَرَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ الْمُغِيرَةِ، قال: حَدَّثَنَا عُثْمَانُ بْنُ سَعِيدٍ، عَنْ شُعَيْبٍ، عَنْ الزُّهْرِيِّ، قال: أَخْبَرَنِي عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ أَبِي بَكْرِ بْنِ عَمْرِو بْنِ حَزْمٍ، أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ عُرْوَةَ بْنَ الزُّبَيْرِ، يَقُولُ: ذَكَرَ مَرْوَانُ فِي إِمَارَتِهِ عَلَى الْمَدِينَةِ أَنَّهُ يُتَوَضَّأُ مِنْ مَسِّ الذَّكَرِ إِذَا أَفْضَى إِلَيْهِ الرَّجُلُ بِيَدِهِ، فَأَنْكَرْتُ ذَلِكَ وَقُلْتُ لَا وُضُوءَ عَلَى مَنْ مَسَّهُ، فَقَالَ مَرْوَانُ: أَخْبَرَتْنِيبُسْرَةُ بِنْتُ صَفْوَانَ، أَنَّهَا سَمِعَتْ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، ذَكَرَ مَا يُتَوَضَّأُ مِنْهُ، فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: وَيُتَوَضَّأُ مِنْ مَسِّ الذَّكَرِ . قَالَ عُرْوَةُ: فَلَمْ أَزَلْ أُمَارِي مَرْوَانَ حَتَّى دَعَا رَجُلًا مِنْ حَرَسِهِ، فَأَرْسَلَهُ إِلَى بُسْرَةَ فَسَأَلَهَا عَمَّا حَدَّثَتْ مَرْوَانَ، فَأَرْسَلَتْ إِلَيْهِ بُسْرَةُ بِمِثْلِ الَّذِي حَدَّثَنِي عَنْهَا مَرْوَانُ.
English Translation
When he was the governor of Al-Madinah, Marwan mentioned that a man should perform Wudu' after touching his penis, if he touches it iwth his hand. I did not like that and I said: 'The one who touches it does not have to perform Wudu'.' Marwan said: 'Busrah bint Safwan رضی اللہ عنہا told me that she heard the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) mention the things for which Wudu' should be performed, and the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: 'Wudu' should be performed after touching the penis.' 'Urwah said: 'I continued to argue with Marwan until he called one of his guards and sent him to Busrah to ask her about what Marwan had narrated, and Busrah رضی اللہ عنہ sent word saying something like that which Marwan had narrated to me from her.
Urdu Translation
مروان نے اپنی مدینہ کی امارت کے دوران ذکر کیا کہ عضو تناسل کے چھونے سے وضو کیا جائے گا، جب اس تک آدمی اپنا ہاتھ لے جائے، تو میں نے اس کا انکار کیا اور کہا: جو عضو تناسل چھوئے اس پر وضو نہیں ہے، تو مروان نے کہا: مجھے بسرہ بنت صفوان رضی اللہ عنہا نے خبر دی ہے کہ انہوں نے رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم سے سنا آپ نے ان چیزوں کا ذکر کیا جن سے وضو کیا جاتا ہے، تو آپ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے فرمایا: اور عضو تناسل چھونے سے ( بھی ) وضو کیا جائے گا ، عروہ کہتے ہیں: میں مروان سے برابر جھگڑتا رہا، یہاں تک کہ انہوں نے اپنے ایک دربان کو بلایا اور اسے بسرہ رضی اللہ عنہا کے پاس بھیجا، چنانچہ اس نے مروان سے بیان کی ہوئی حدیث کے بارے میں بسرہ رضی اللہ عنہا سے دریافت کیا، تو بسرہ نے اسی طرح کی بات کہلا بھیجی جو مروان نے ان کے واسطے سے مجھ سے بیان کی تھی۔

It was narrated from Abu Hurairah رضی اللہ عنہ that:
أَخْبَرَنَا قُتَيْبَةُ بْنُ سَعِيدٍ، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ، عَنْ الزُّهْرِيِّ، عَنْ أَبِي سَلَمَةَ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ، أَنّ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، قَالَ: إِذَا اسْتَيْقَظَ أَحَدُكُمْ مِنْ نَوْمِهِ، فَلَا يَغْمِسْ يَدَهُ فِي وَضُوئِهِ حَتَّى يَغْسِلَهَا ثَلَاثًا، فَإِنَّ أَحَدَكُمْ لَا يَدْرِي أَيْنَ بَاتَتْ يَدُهُ .
The Prophet (ﷺ) said: When any one of you wakes from sleep, let him not dip his hand in (the water he uses for) his Wudu' until he has washed it three times, for none of you knows where his hand spent the night.
It was narrated that Huthaifah رضی اللہ عنہ said:
أَخْبَرَنَا إِسْحَاقُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ، وَقُتَيْبَةُ بْنُ سَعِيدٍ، عَنْ جَرِيرٍ، عَنْ مَنْصُورٍ، عَنْ أَبِي وَائِلٍ، عَنْ حُذَيْفَةَ، قَالَ: كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ إِذَا قَامَ مِنَ اللَّيْلِ يَشُوصُ فَاهُ بِالسِّوَاكِ .
When the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) got up at night, he would brush his mouth with the Siwak.
It was narrated that Abu Musa رضی اللہ عنہ said:
أَخْبَرَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ عَبْدَةَ، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا حَمَّادُ بْنُ زَيْدٍ، قَالَ: أَخْبَرَنَا غَيْلَانُ بْنُ جَرِيرٍ، عَنْ أَبِي بُرْدَةَ، عَنْ أَبِي مُوسَى، قَالَ: دَخَلْتُ عَلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَهُوَ يَسْتَنُّ وَطَرَفُ السِّوَاكِ عَلَى لِسَانِهِ وَهُوَ يَقُولُ: عَأْ عَأْ .
I came to the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) when he was using the Siwak, and the end of the Siwak was on his toungue, and he was saying, 'A','a'.
It was narrated from Abu Burdah that Abu Musa رضی اللہ عنہ said:
أَخْبَرَنَا عَمْرُو بْنُ عَلِيٍّ، حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى وَهُوَ ابْنُ سَعِيدٍ، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا قُرَّةُ بْنُ خَالِدٍ، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا حُمَيْدُ بْنُ هِلَالٍ، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنِي أَبُو بُرْدَةَ، عَنْ أَبِي مُوسَى، قَالَ: أَقْبَلْتُ إِلَى النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَمَعِي رَجُلَانِ مِنَ الْأَشْعَرِيِّينَ، أَحَدُهُمَا عَنْ يَمِينِي وَالْآخَرُ عَنْ يَسَارِي وَرَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَسْتَاكُ فَكِلَاهُمَا سَأَلَ الْعَمَلَ قُلْتُ: وَالَّذِي بَعَثَكَ بِالْحَقِّ نَبِيًّا، مَا أَطْلَعَانِي عَلَى مَا فِي أَنْفُسِهِمَا وَمَا شَعَرْتُ أَنَّهُمَا يَطْلُبَانِ الْعَمَلَ، فَكَأَنِّي أَنْظُرُ إِلَى سِوَاكِهِ تَحْتَ شَفَتِهِ قَلَصَتْ، فَقَالَ: إِنَّا لَا أَوْ لَنْ نَسْتَعِينَ عَلَى الْعَمَلِ مَنْ أَرَادَهُ، وَلَكِنْ اذْهَبْ أَنْتَ ، فَبَعَثَهُ عَلَى الْيَمَنِ ثُمَّ أَرْدَفَهُ مُعَاذُ بْنُ جَبَلٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمَا.
I came to the Prophet (ﷺ) when he was using the Siwak and with me were two men of the Ash'aris - one on my right and the other on my left - who were seeking to be appointed as officials. I said: 'By the One Who sent you as a Prophet with the truth, they did not tell me why they wanted to come with me and I did not realize that they were seeking to be appointed as officials.' And I could see his Siwak beneath his lip, then it slipped and he said: 'We do not' - or; 'We will never appoint as an official anyone who seeks that. Rather you should go.' So he sent his (Abu Musa) to Yemen, then he sent Mu'adh bin Jabal رضی اللہ عنہم to go after him - may Allah be pleased with them.
