أَخْبَرَنَا هَارُونُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ، قال: حَدَّثَنَا مَعْنٌ، قال: حَدَّثَنَا مُعَاوِيَةُ بْنُ صَالِحٍ، عَنْ حَبِيبِ بْنِ عُبَيْدٍ الْكَلَاعِيِّ، عَنْ جُبَيْرِ بْنِ نُفَيْرٍ الْحَضْرَمِيِّ، قال: سَمِعْتُ عَوْفَ بْنَ مَالِكٍ، يَقُولُ: سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يُصَلِّي عَلَى مَيِّتٍ فَسَمِعْتُ فِي دُعَائِهِ، وَهُوَ يَقُولُ: اللَّهُمَّ اغْفِرْ لَهُ وَارْحَمْهُ وَعَافِهِ، وَاعْفُ عَنْهُ وَأَكْرِمْ نُزُلَهُ، وَوَسِّعْ مُدْخَلَهُ وَاغْسِلْهُ بِالْمَاءِ وَالثَّلْجِ وَالْبَرَدِ، وَنَقِّهِ مِنَ الْخَطَايَا كَمَا نَقَّيْتَ الثَّوْبَ الْأَبْيَضَ مِنَ الدَّنَسِ، وَأَبْدِلْهُ دَارًا خَيْرًا مِنْ دَارِهِ وَأَهْلًا خَيْرًا مِنْ أَهْلِهِ وَزَوْجًا خَيْرًا مِنْ زَوْجِهِ، وَأَدْخِلْهُ الْجَنَّةَ وَنَجِّهِ مِنَ النَّارِ، أَوْ قَالَ وَأَعِذْهُ مِنْ عَذَابِ الْقَبْرِ .
English Translation
I heard 'Awf bin Malik رضی الله عنہ say: I heard the Messenger of Allah offering the funeral prayer for one who had died, and I heard him say in his supplication: Allahummaghfir lahu warhamhu wa 'afihi, wa a'fu 'anhu, wa akrim nuzulahu wa wassi' mudkhalahu waghsilhu bil-ma wath-thalji wal-barad, wa naqqihi min al-khataya kama naqqaita-thawb al-abyad min ad-danas. Wa abdilhu daran khairan min darihi, wa ahlan khayran min ahlihi, wa zawjan khayran min zawjihi. Wa adkhilahul-jannah wa najjihi min an-nar (O Allah, forgive him and have mercy on him, keep him safe and sound and forgive him, honor the place where he settles and make his entrance wide; wash him with water and snow and hail, and cleanse him of his sin as you cleanse a white garment of dirt. O Allah, give him a house better than his house and a family better than his family and a wife better than his wife, and admit him to Paradise and save him from Hellfire). Or he said: Wa a'idhhu min 'adhab al-qabr (And protect him from the torment of the grave.)
Urdu Translation
میں نے عوف بن مالک رضی الله عنہ کو کہتے سنا:میں نے رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم کو ایک میت پر صلاۃ پڑھتے سنا، تو میں نے سنا کہ آپ اس کے لیے دعا میں یہ کہہ رہے تھے: «اللہم اغفر له وارحمه وعافه واعف عنه وأكرم نزله ووسع مدخله واغسله بالماء والثلج والبرد ونقه من الخطايا كما نقيت الثوب الأبيض من الدنس وأبدله دارا خيرا من داره وأهلا خيرا من أهله وزوجا خيرا من زوجه وأدخله الجنة ونجه من النار - أو قال - وأعذه من عذاب القبر» ”اے اللہ! اس کی مغفرت فرما، اس پر رحم کر، اسے عافیت دے، اسے معاف کر دے، اس کی ( بہترین ) مہمان نوازی فرما، اس کی ( قبر ) کشادہ کر دے، اسے پانی، برف اور اولے سے دھو دے، اسے گناہوں سے اس طرح صاف کر دے جیسے سفید کپڑا میل کچیل سے صاف کیا جاتا ہے، اس کو بدلے میں اس کے گھر سے اچھا گھر، اس کے گھر والوں سے بہتر گھر والے، اور اس کی بیوی سے اچھی بیوی عطا کر، اور اسے جنت میں داخل کر، اور جہنم کے عذاب سے نجات دے، یا فرمایا اسے عذاب قبر سے بچا“۔

أَخْبَرَنَا هَارُونُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ، حَدَّثَنَا مَعْنٌ، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا إِبْرَاهِيمُ بْنُ سَعْدٍ، عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ، عَنْ عُبَيْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عُتْبَةَ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ، أَنّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ: لَا يَتَمَنَّيَنَّ أَحَدٌ مِنْكُمُ الْمَوْتَ إِمَّا مُحْسِنًا فَلَعَلَّهُ أَنْ يَزْدَادَ خَيْرًا، وَإِمَّا مُسِيئًا فَلَعَلَّهُ أَنْ يَسْتَعْتِبَ .
The Messenger of Allah said: None of you should wish for death. Either he is a doer of good, so perhaps he may do more good, or he is an evildoer but perhaps he will give up his evil ways.
It was narrated from Abu Ubaid the freed slave of 'Abdur-Rahman bin Awf that he heard Abu Huraidah رضی الله عنہ say:
أَخْبَرَنَا عَمْرُو بْنُ عُثْمَانَ، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا بَقِيَّةُ، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنِي الزُّبَيْدِيُّ، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنِي الزُّهْرِيُّ، عَنْ أَبِي عُبَيْدٍ مَوْلَى عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ عَوْفٍ، أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ أَبَا هُرَيْرَةَ، يَقُولُ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: لَا يَتَمَنَّيَنَّ أَحَدُكُمُ الْمَوْتَ إِمَّا مُحْسِنًا فَلَعَلَّهُ أَنْ يَعِيشَ يَزْدَادُ خَيْرًا وَهُوَ خَيْرٌ لَهُ، وَإِمَّا مُسِيئًا فَلَعَلَّهُ أَنْ يَسْتَعْتِبَ .
'None of you should wish for death. Either he is a doer of good, so if he lives he will do more good or he is a doer of evil but perhaps he will give up his evil ways. '
It was narrated form Anas رضی الله عنہ that:
أَخْبَرَنَا قُتَيْبَةُ، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا يَزِيدُ وَهُوَ ابْنُ زُرَيْعٍ، عَنْ حُمَيْدٍ، عَنْ أَنَسٍ، أَنّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ: لَا يَتَمَنَّيَنَّ أَحَدُكُمُ الْمَوْتَ لِضُرٍّ نَزَلَ بِهِ فِي الدُّنْيَا وَلَكِنْ لِيَقُلْ، اللَّهُمَّ أَحْيِنِي مَا كَانَتِ الْحَيَاةُ خَيْرًا لِي، وَتَوَفَّنِي إِذَا كَانَتِ الْوَفَاةُ خَيْرًا لِي .
The Messenger of Allah said: None of you should wish for death because of some harm that befalls him, rather he should say: 'Allahumma ahini ma kanatil-hayatu khairanli wa tawaffani idha kanatil-wafatu khairanli (O Allah, keep me alive so alive so long as life is good for me, and cause me to die when death is good for me.) '
It was narrated that Anas رضی الله عنہ said:
أَخْبَرَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ حُجْرٍ، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا إِسْمَاعِيلُ ابْنُ عُلَيَّةَ، عَنْ عَبْدِ الْعَزِيزِ. ح وَأَنْبَأَنَا عِمْرَانُ بْنُ مُوسَى، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَاعَبْدُ الْوَارِثِ، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الْعَزِيزِ، عَنْ أَنَسٍ، قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: أَلَا لَا يَتَمَنَّى أَحَدُكُمُ الْمَوْتَ لِضُرٍّ نَزَلَ بِهِ فَإِنْ كَانَ لَا بُدَّ مُتَمَنِّيًا الْمَوْتَ فَلْيَقُلْ: اللَّهُمَّ أَحْيِنِي مَا كَانَتِ الْحَيَاةُ خَيْرًا لِي، وَتَوَفَّنِي مَا كَانَتِ الْوَفَاةُ خَيْرًا لِي .
The Messenger of Allah said: 'None of you should wish for death because of some harm that befalls him. If he must wish for death, let him say: Allahumma ahini ma kanatil-hayatu khairantli wa tawaffani idha kanatil-wafatu khairanli (O Allah, keep me alive so long as life is good for me, and cause me to die when death is good for me)
