Narrated by: It was narrated from Makhramah bin Sulaiman that Kuraib - the freed slave of Ibn 'Abbas - told him:

أَخْبَرَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الْحَكَمِ، عَنْ شُعَيْبٍ، عَنْ اللَّيْثِ، قال: حَدَّثَنَا خَالِدٌ، عَنْ ابْنِ أَبِي هِلَالٍ، عَنْ مَخْرَمَةَ بْنِ سُلَيْمَانَ، أَنَّ كُرَيْبًا مُولِي ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ أَخْبَرَهُ، قال: سَأَلْتُ ابْنَ عَبَّاسٍ، قُلْتُ: كَيْفَ كَانَتْ صَلَاةُ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ بِاللَّيْلِ ؟ فَوَصَفَ أَنَّهُ صَلَّى إِحْدَى عَشْرَةَ رَكْعَةً بِالْوِتْرِ ثُمَّ نَامَ حَتَّى اسْتَثْقَلَ فَرَأَيْتُهُ يَنْفُخُ، وَأَتَاهُ بِلَالٌ، فَقَالَ: الصَّلَاةُ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ، فَقَامَ فَصَلَّى رَكْعَتَيْنِ وَصَلَّى بِالنَّاسِ وَلَمْ يَتَوَضَّأْ .
English Translation
I asked Ibn 'Abbas رضی اللہ عنہم : 'How did the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) pray at night?' He said: 'He prayed eleven Rak'ahs including Witr, then he slept deeply until I could hear him snoring, then Bilal رضی اللہ عنہ came to him and said: The prayer, O Messenger of Allah! Then he got up and prayed two brief Rak'ahs then led the people in prayer, and hedid not perform Wudu'.'
Urdu Translation
میں نے ابن عباس رضی اللہ عنہم سے پوچھا: رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم کی تہجد ( صلاۃ اللیل ) کیسی تھی؟ تو انہوں نے بتایا کہ آپ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے وتر کے ساتھ گیارہ رکعتیں پڑھیں، پھر سو گئے یہاں تک کہ نیند گہری ہو گئی، پھر میں نے آپ کو خراٹے لیتے ہوئے دیکھا، اتنے میں آپ کے پاس بلال رضی اللہ عنہ آئے، اور عرض کیا: اللہ کے رسول! نماز؟ تو آپ نے اٹھ کر دو رکعتیں پڑھیں، پھر لوگوں کو نماز پڑھائی اور ( پھر سے ) وضو نہیں کیا۔

Nafi' narrated that 'Abdullah bin 'Umar رضی اللہ عنہم used to say:
أَخْبَرَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ إِسْمَاعِيلَ وَإِبْرَاهِيمُ بْنُ الْحَسَنِ، قَالَا: حَدَّثَنَا حَجَّاجٌ، قال: قال ابْنُ جُرَيْجٍ: أَخْبَرَنِي نَافِعٌ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عُمَرَ، أَنَّهُ كَانَ يَقُولُ: كَانَ الْمُسْلِمُونَ حِينَ قَدِمُوا الْمَدِينَةَ يَجْتَمِعُونَ فَيَتَحَيَّنُونَ الصَّلَاةَ وَلَيْسَ يُنَادِي بِهَا أَحَدٌ، فَتَكَلَّمُوا يَوْمًا فِي ذَلِكَ، فَقَالَ بَعْضُهُمْ: اتَّخِذُوا نَاقُوسًا مِثْلَ نَاقُوسِ النَّصَارَى، وَقَالَ بَعْضَهُمْ: بَلْ قَرْنًا مِثْلَ قَرْنِ الْيَهُودِ، فَقَالَ عُمَرُ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ: أَوَلَا تَبْعَثُونَ رَجُلًا يُنَادِي بِالصَّلَاةِ ؟ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: يَا بِلَالُ، قُمْ فَنَادِ بِالصَّلَاةِ .
When the Muslims arrived in Al-Madinah they used to gather and try to figure out the time for prayer, and no one gave the call to prayer. One day they spoke about that; some of them said: 'Let us use a bell like the Christians do;' others said, 'No, a horn like the Jews have.' 'Umar رضی اللہ عنہ said: 'Why don't you send a man to announce the time of prayer?' The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: 'O Bilal, get up and give the call to prayer.'
It was narrated that Anas رضی اللہ عنہ said:
أَخْبَرَنَا قُتَيْبَةُ بْنُ سَعِيدٍ، قال: حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الْوَهَّابِ، عَنْ أَيُّوبَ، عَنْ أَبِي قِلَابَةَ، عَنْ أَنَسٍ، قال: إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَمَرَ بِلَالًا أَنْ يَشْفَعَ الْأَذَانَ وَأَنْ يُوتِرَ الْإِقَامَةَ .
The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) commanded Bilal to say the phrases of the Adhan twice and the phrasses of the Iqamah once.
It was narrated that Ibn 'Umar رضی اللہ عنہم said:
أَخْبَرَنَا عَمْرُو بْنُ عَلِيٍّ، قال: حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى، قال: حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ، قال: حَدَّثَنِي أَبُو جَعْفَرٍ، عَنْ أَبِي الْمُثَنَّى، عَنْ ابْنِ عُمَرَ، قال: كَانَ الْأَذَانُ عَلَى عَهْدِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ مَثْنَى مَثْنَى، وَالْإِقَامَةُ مَرَّةً مَرَّةً، إِلَّا أَنَّكَ تَقُولُ: قَدْ قَامَتِ الصَّلَاةُ، قَدْ قَامَتِ الصَّلَاةُ .
At the time of the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) the phrases of the Adhan were said twice and the phrases of the Iqamah were said once, except that you should I say: 'Qad Qamatis-Salah, Qad Qamatis-Salah (prayer is about to begin, prayer is about to begin).'
It was narrated from Abu Mahdhurah رضی اللہ عنہ that:
أَخْبَرَنَا بِشْرُ بْنُ مُعَاذٍ، قال: حَدَّثَنِي إِبْرَاهِيمُ وَهُوَ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْعَزِيزِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الْمَلِكِ بْنِ أَبِي مَحْذُورَةَ، قال: حَدَّثَنِي أَبِي عَبْدُ الْعَزِيزِ، وَجَدِّي عَبْدُ الْمَلِكِ، عَنْ أَبِي مَحْذُورَةَ، أَنّ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَقْعَدَهُ فَأَلْقَى عَلَيْهِ الْأَذَانَ حَرْفًا حَرْفًا، قَالَ إِبْرَاهِيمُ: هُوَ مِثْلُ أَذَانِنَا هَذَا، قُلْتُ لَهُ: أَعِدْ عَلَيَّ، قَالَ: اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ، أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ مَرَّتَيْنِ، أَشْهَدُ أَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ مَرَّتَيْنِ، ثُمَّ قَالَ: بِصَوْتٍ دُونَ ذَلِكَ الصَّوْتِ يُسْمِعُ مَنْ حَوْلَهُ: أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ مَرَّتَيْنِ، أَشْهَدُ أَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ مَرَّتَيْنِ، حَيَّ عَلَى الصَّلَاةِ مَرَّتَيْنِ، حَيَّ عَلَى الْفَلَاحِ مَرَّتَيْنِ، اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ، لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ .
The Prophet (ﷺ) sat him down and taught him the Adhan letter by letter. (One of the narrators) Ibrahim said, It is like this Adhan of ours . I said[1]: Recite it to me. He said, Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar (Allah is the greatest, Allah is the greatest), Ashhadu an la ilaha illallah (I bear witness that there is none worthy of worship except Allah) - twice. Ashhadu anna Muhammadan Rasulallah (I bear witness that Muhammad is the messenger of Allah) - twice. Then he said in a lower voice which those around him could here: Ashhadu an la ilaha ill-Allah (I bear witness that there is none worthy of worship except Allah) - twice. Ashhadu anna Muhammadan Rasulallah (I bear witness that Muhammad is the messenger of Allah) - twice, Hayya'ala as-salah (come to prayer) - twice, Hayya alal-falah (come to prosperity) - twice, Allahu Akbar Allahu Akbar la ilaha illallah (Allah is the Greatest, Allah is the Greatest, there is none worthy of worship except Allah). [1] Bishir bin Mu'adh who heard it from Ibrahim, and from whom An-Nasa'i is reporting it, is the one who is asking for the Adhan to be recited to him.
